This afternoon, I parked the car in front of Taylor's school, opened the door, so she could get out, gave her a big hug and kiss, told her I loved her and watched her walk back toward her kindergarten class. When I could see she was well on her way, I climbed back in the car, turned the radio on, and drove away.
As many of you know, I am a huge country music fan! Just as I turned the corner, a new song, by Trace Adkins, was introduced (and I really love him) so I turned the volume up. It was a song called, "You're Gonna Miss This." As I listened to the story, he told about a young, 18-year old, girl telling her mom she couldn't wait to be on her own, pay her own way, make her own rules, and her mom tells her, "you're gonna miss this, you're gonna want this back, you're gonna wish these days hadn't gone by so fast, these are some good days, so take a good look around, you may not know it now, but you're gonna miss this."
Then, a few years later, this young girl is newly married, living in a small apartment, and her dad comes over to visit and she tells him how she can't wait to start a family and buy a house and he tells her, "you're gonna miss this, you're gonna want this back, you're gonna wish these days hadn't gone by so fast, these are some good days, so take a good look around, you may not know it now, but you're gonna miss this"
Then, the story fast forwards and she has a plumber at the house fixing a broken water heater, one kid is screaming, the other is crying, the dog is barking, the phones ringing, and she keeps apologizing to plumber and he tells her it's o.k. and he understands. He goes on to tell her that his kids were once young like hers and now they're much older and then, of course, says, "you're gonna miss this! You're gonna want this back, you're gonna wish these days hadn't gone by so fast, these are some good days, so take a good look around, you may not know it now, but you're gonna miss this!"
By the time I reached my driveway I was in tears. It really made me realize how much every moment really matters and how much time has already gone by so fast! Then, I started thinking about what type of things, in my life, I was "gonna" look back and miss and want back! Regardless of the trials or hard times these really are good days and ones I will look back and miss.
So, here is my list (well, at least a few) of things that I'm "gonna miss!"
- The way Blake says "doo-doo" (for choo-choo)
- The way Luke prefaces every sentence with "Mommy, you know what?"
- Taylor's stories where she sounds out her words. For instance, "war (where) can you fit (find) flawrs (flowers).
- Their prayers...they bless everything, even the Easter Bunny!
- Singing, cuddling, rocking, and kissing Blake before putting him in bed.
- Bedtime stories. Especially when we read the story, in the B.O.M, about Nephi slaying Laban, and Luke told us he doesn't want to ever read that book again because it's scary.
- Watching them eat ice cream and getting it all over their face.
- Hearing Luke sing the TransFormer song and talking to me over and over about autobots and decepticons.
- Doing braids, ponytails, topsytails, and curling Taylor's hair...because I know one day she won't let me.
- Watching them have compassion for one another and giving each other hugs and kisses.
- Luke and Taylor saying, "I love you, Mom."
- Kisses from Blake, especially when he makes the smacking sound with his lips.
- Blake's naked bum, legs, and tummy...he is still so chubby!
- And most of all, their playful giggles, smiles, and innocent ways...they are just so cute!

ok so I'll call you as soon as I stop crying! I'm glad you heard that song and it made you think about all the things you love right now! We are always looking forward to tomorrow aren't we? Thanks for bringing me back to the present moment! Great post!
I love that song! Well....sort of. Life goes by WAY TOO FAST to wish it away! Love you lots!
It is so true. I was talking to one of my friends about how with the next kid we will miss the time alone we have with our kids since we only have one, so far.
That was so cute! That encouraged me to think of my own kids and all the moments that I love and know I will miss some day!
Beautiful, wise words. Must go get a kleenix now. Thanks.
I heard a similar song on the radio while in the car the other day. Something about being six years old and taking a nap and then 100 years passes by so fast. Then I started crying. Darn those country songs. Must they catch us unawares while we are just doing errands. I'm going to have to go back to listening to rap.
That is so sweet! It's true what the song says. I look back at pictures of when I was little and miss those days. Then I see Lukas as a little baby and miss that. And now Max is getting so big and I miss when he was so little! I think I'm going to cry now! Thanks for the sentimental moment!
what a good reminder to treasure each day and not wish away our lives waiting to get to the next stage. Someday they won't dump their cereal out every morning and I will cry.
Kimberly - This is way too fun, I have had such a good time reading about your family. Your little ones are so cute and I love seeing San Diego as the back ground, one of my very favorite places. Your Mom was saying it seems impossible we have kids this old and grandkids this old, of course we are not getting any older, just the kids are. It will be so fun to reconnect and keep up with what everyone is doing.
Love ~ LaDean
What a sweet post Kimberly! I love the days like that, when you can really just stop for a moment and soak in everything you love about your life and family! I dont ever want these kids to grow up!
I love that song!! Did you see him perform it the other night on Celebrity Apprentice? Awesome!! I love your list and had to laugh at the story in the BOM that scares your kiddos. Mine thought that was the coolest story ever! Kinda scared me that they thought that actually. ;o)
I love Country Western music and time does go by much too fast. I am really happy that you are taking the moment to enjoy and watch and listen because this is such a blink in time. The BOM does have some really scary things that happen and is written for US NOW and we are to learn from them. Actually the BOM is our instructions for our time.
That makes another song about Trace Adkins (or is it Atkins). If you like him so much, you should have mom and dad drive you over to his house next time you're in Nash-town. He lives just down the road. Maybe he'll write a song about you...oh wait, he's already written two (or more)..."One Hot Mama" and now "You're Gonna Miss This."
